HAM 50-6.50 Landslide Repair at US 50
Ohio Department of Transportation
Hamilton Co., Ohio

Landslide activity has been on-going for decades on the riverside slope along U.S. Rt. 50, in western Hamilton County, Ohio. This site stretches about 860 feet along the roadway. The landslide zone extends downslope of the road, beneath some railroad tracks, and into the Ohio River.

Continuous earth movements had affected the stability of the roadbed, causing pavement cracks, subsidence and utility damage. Working under tight schedule constraints in 2005, while some lanes of traffic were closed due to damage, HCN conducted analyses and developed design recommendations and details for a requested "temporary" repair. The potential cost for a more permanent repair was well beyond available ODOT funds at the time.

HCN recommended and conducted a geotechnical instrumentation program to observe the drilled shaft behavior after installation. This program began in part during construction and has progressed well after construction was completed. The instrumentation program has included 11 inclinometers (5 of which were cast inside individual drilled shafts), 3 vibrating wire push-in earth pressure cells, and 12 vibrating wire strain gages installed on the steel beams embedded in the drilled shafts.
